Before Breton navigators sailed down the coast of Africa and around the Cape of Good Hope, spices from the Orient traveled through Venice. When I delved deeper into the history of this seafaring city, I learned about the primary spices traded. These included ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg, which were all used extensively during the Middle Ages.
I formulated this blend with the fruit that today symbolizes Italian cuisine – the tomato (native to Peru) – in the forefront of my mind. It plays like a melody of notes that links the history of Venice, its lagoon, and Marco Polo’s fabulous excursion east.
My only regret is that I didn’t call it Casanova Powder!
